Born in 1966 in Duisburg, Dr. Berktold studied mechanical engineering as well as industrial engineering from 1986 to 1993 at the RWTH University of Technology in Aachen. After this he worked until 1998 as consultant and later project leader for a management consultancy in Düsseldorf. Parallel to this Dr. Berktold took his doctorate on the subject of turnaround management at the Europa Viadrina University in Frankfurt/Oder. In 1998 he came to Gruner & Jahr as an assistant to the board of directors and worked initially at Gruner Print in Itzehoe in sales/customer service. In his next challenge, beginning in early 2000, he followed the Elbe south from Hamburg to Dresden. A series of posts followed at Dresden Print and Publishing House. Firstly in the role of assistant to the head of the Dresden printworks, after several months he became head of quotation management / resources planning and subsequently deputy head of the Dresden works. In March 2002 Dr. Berktold took over the management of the Dresden printworks, and became managing director of Prinovis Dresden in July 2005.

In June 2006 he took over management of Prinovis Ahrensbourg and Prinovis Itzehoe.
